We’ve been itching to share the news of our new adventure! We are nearly 4 months pregnant and my belly has really “popped” in the last few weeks!
This beautiful process is quite different than anything else I’ve experienced. I’m enchanted by my growing passion for giving myself joyfully to our child’s development, as I feel the budding presence of our little baby. I feel so fortunate to be a physical vehicle for creation! It is a humbling experience, impressing how little I understand about the fabric we contribute to, and receive fuel from. Delight in this mystery has become my baseline sensation, animating each moment with a sunny texture… even the less savory ones;)! As we get closer to the due date, I feel less frightened about delivery, and more… curious. I anticipate sharing an experience that connects women to our female ancestors, and I’m so eager to meet our baby.

What Makes You Feel Like Anything Is Possible? Expressing gratitude? Being in nature? Facing a challenge? Doing something kind for another… or for yourself? Looking into the eyes of someone you trust, and knowing that they see you? Behaving in alignment with your values rather than indulging in impulse? Surprising someone you love? The endorphin kick of a workout? Laughing so hard that you can’t stop? Hearing the infinite optimism of a child’s voice and laughter? Reciting affirmations or mantras? Meditation and/or prayer? Nutrition packed meals? Dancing to a favorite song? Letting silliness flow through you? Witnessing creation in one of its many forms… art, music, a sunset, birth, gardens? These are some of my many prompts to the feeling: Anything Is Possible. I would love to indulge in hearing yours!!
Sometimes I receive a whisper. Other times the sensation pulses through all of me, changing the smile on my face, the cadence of my step, the lift in my chin, the space around my body. And I think: I’m beautiful right now in the experience of momentary convening with grace. This beauty transcends feature-symmetry, a firm body, make-up, perfect hair, or fashionable clothing. It holds healing power as a beauty that can only be described poetically. This is a radiance that glows when one allows him/herself to be a vehicle for an almighty that is universal across most religions: gracious goodness. When I try to keep it, own it, encapsulate it… it escapes me. It arrives in moments of surrender to just being… to awe and wonder… to quiet abandon of the need to think. When I see it in another, I want to holler: “Thank you!”, but find myself silenced by a hope that the spell may not be broken!
I’d like to deliver a wish that we will all acquiesce to more moments of hope! What makes you feel like anything is possible? Do it! Submit yourself to the goodness that is available to each of us! This allowance will foster the well of grace available to you;)!
Anything is possible today! Let’s lift our chins and spirits to optimism, and KNOW that we have something special to offer the world today. No one is just like you, and only you can manifest your unique combination of attributes and interests. Harness them, and package them for the betterment of our world! Consider what may be if we each identify who we came to this world to BE… what we came here to GET DONE. Find a place/venue/job/community that needs your particular strengths, rather than fretting over the spirit-diminishing task of changing self to fit a mold. However “utopic” this may seem, we can always move closer to the ideal we envision. I promise that trying will only yield positive results!

I love morning. Anticipation… Inventory… Bravery… Morning carries bravery in her basket.
There are barb prongs uprooted from my skin… Layers of caging removed… Disillusions soothed… Saved in a rattling tin can, for the days when I need proof.
Someone said I couldn’t feel light on my cheeks, because I’m bad, because I’m wrong, because I’m weak. Spirit penitentiary has rules that change with each move we make. Victory only comes in discarding the need to stake.
What if there is no sun in my soul? I hold my breath… What if they’re correct? I open the door in spite of them, in spite of myself, and step forward into delicious white… blessed.
At last I’m free, outside my cell. But still I stay close, feeling dirt under my bouncing frame. If I could take my captors with me, no magnet would remain.
All of me dances… even my face… even my hair. Feet drum. Stamping silent cries. Defusing the mirage. I submit to a cadence my soul has always known, banishing the demons back to their home.
Most of my scars are beauty marks now, others are infected… Iron slivers, bits of wood, bloody shards yet rejected.
“One day soon, happiness won’t feel so rebellious,” she whispers… “Each fragment will know that self-love is not self-ish.”
“How does freedom feel?”, probes Mother Earth. I want to answer her with a 24-carat glimmer in my voice, and so I search.
I close my eyes and I see: A transgressed limp… Trombones crying… Transitory cacophony… And I’m inhaling and exhaling… And the shine is not in my voice, but in my tearing eyes, and I say: “I’ll have to get back to you on that; all I can do today is dance”.

Cooking from recipes lowers our margin for error, usually ensuring a delicious outcome. On the other hand, it often requires a grocery run. Eliminate waste, saving gas, money, and time, by working from a baseline recipe and swapping-in ingredients you already have in the kitchen. Added bonus: Although I don’t show this in the example below, note that ingredient swapping can also help us eliminate use of out-of-season ingredients.
Last week, I decided that I needed a healthy vegetable and chicken lunch. To add a flavorful topping, I made an indulgent Pesto Cream Sauce. Of the 7 ingredients in the Gorgonzola Cream Sauce baseline recipe I used, I only had 3:
- Pinch of salt
- 1 TBS butter
- 4 cloves garlic
I swapped the remaining 4 ingredients, and embellished the sauce with additional ingredients that were fresh and ready to be used!
Ingredients I swapped:
- 1 TBS Butter => Grassfed Butter (Of course!)
- 1 TBS All Purpose Flour => Coconut Flour (I don’t use AP flour, for health purposes)
- 1.25 Cups Low fat milk => .5 Cup Half & Half, .75 Cups Water
- 1/4 Cups Cream Cheese => 1/4 Cup Goat Cheese
- 1/2 Cup Gorgonzola Cheese => I used the 2TBS I had left, and added a little more goat cheese and another pinch of salt
Embellishments – Eliminate Waste by adding ingredients you already have, that need to be used:
- Chopped tomato – The evening before, we’d had tacos; a tupperware of left-over tomato was beckoning.
- Basil – A carton of basil, ready and fresh… how could I resist throwing this bundle in the food processor and morphing my creation into a pesto cream sauce??? #JustDoIt!
- .10 gallons of gas
- An estimated $12 on groceries
- At least 45 minutes for the shopping trip
- Waste – Remaining AP flour, milk, and cream cheese would have likely gone unused
DARE I SAY THE OUTCOME WAS TASTIER? I DARE! Easy, given my love for pesto and tomato.
Add butter, crushed garlic, & flour at medium heat. Brown for 2-3 mins.
Slowly stir in half & half and water.
Add cheeses and basil. Stir until it mix melts and thickens.
Add tomato and pinch of salt to taste. Stir and lower heat, until you have desired consistency!
Sprinkle onto healthy meal for flavor. Delicious!

Hello beautiful people! I’m writing to share that my first article for H3O Eco Magazine is published. The Biocadence column is on pages 18-19, and I am featured as a contributor on page 7. In Heart of Dryness, James Workman chronicles the extraordinary legal case
of Kalahari Bushmen versus Botswana Government. Allegedly naming wildlife preservation and reduced water-distribution costs as a cover for his intent to mine the area for diamonds, Bostwanian President Festus Mogae cut off the Kalahari Bushmen water supply in 2002. The Bushmen were offered government aid, shelter, and complimentary water outside the reserve, and severe thirst (a visceral competition amongst the body’s organs for the limited fluid available) was cause for many Bushmen to flee the Kalahari. Year over year, families of Bushmen surrendered to reservations. However, some continued to endure extreme famine in order to remain in their homeland. As Workman flows between journalist and storyteller, the following prompts whisper persistently: Why did the Bushmen sacrifice everything to remain in the Kalahari? Why did they endure passive and aggressive forms of torture, in order to salvage their homeland?
It is likely, many would say definitive, that we are headed toward drier global conditions. We must consider how progressively higher temperatures and less accessible fresh water will impact our families. The nuances of community and human survival will evolve, and we will be forced to acknowledge our descendants’ quality of life when making consumptive choices. The Heart of Dryness observes the acutely leveraged indigenous Bushmen community, with hopes of rescuing water-retrieval techniques for future generations. As spectator of the Bushmen water-procurement craft, James Workman offers a vivid snapshot of the culture we may have evolved from. Musing about a Bushman family matriarch, he writes, “Face of Eve: Quoroxloo’s DNA holds the purest genetic strains, revealing her as perhaps the closest kin to our ninety- thousand-year-old common ancestor, the earliest mother of humankind”. In documenting the inherited skill-set, he endows the understanding that Bushmen water-handling is a vital ingredient for the survival and development of our species.

I’ve often heard the witty complaint: “It’s not Whole Foods; it’s Whole Paycheck”. I’ve indulged in the Whole Foods experience enough to know that this can be the case. The Chow blog shares the results of their investigative shopping experiment:
“Our run for “regular” groceries at the local Safeway came to $136.31, typical for a week’s worth of our groceries (and some leftovers). The total for the organic groceries was $199.78, about $65 more. And remember, organic food comes in smaller packages. Using these rough numbers, eating purely organic would cost us about $260 more per month.” (Source)
$260 more per month would certainly be cost prohibitive for many! However, this conjecture balances upon a modern foundation — one that may prove to be rickety: we should spend less than 10% of our overall income on food.
“Consider that in 1932, spending on food at home took almost 22% of disposable income, compared to the record low of only 5.6% in 2008.” (Source)
Might it be that we can afford relatively “expensive” real-food if we prioritize nutrition over entertainment and ease? Has our culture decided that accessibility to technology, cell phones, cable television, video games (dare I add cigarettes and alcohol, for many) are more important than real-food? Might this upside-down priority pyramid be reinforced by the addictive quality of inexpensive processed foods made from seemingly infinite variations of (for the most part) two government-subsidized ingredients: corn and petroleum?
Purchasing real-food can feel like a squeeze. In response to this, we must recognize that nutrition and health are list-toppers, bar none! As I wrote in In Response to Coca-Cola Anti-Obesity Campaign,
“The pharmaceutical consequences of consuming GMOs, as well as other substances disguised as food (i.e. high fructose corn syrup) may result in prohibitive healthcare costs for the very same families who feel threatened by rising food costs!”
Despite its reputation for being prohibitively expensive, real-food is not always as expensive as the nay-sayers would have us believe. While I pray that our culture rediscovers the importance of real-food to the extent that we are willing to pay for it, there are few barriers to uncovering inexpensive real-food!

Oh my goodness, there is produce everywhere… literally. Think you can’t get organic, California grown avocados and berries in the winter? Think again!
Behind me in the check-out line is a lady with a full cart of produce. She shares: “I come all the way from Hercules to get my groceries here. It’s so much more fresh than anything in my local markets.”
Why do I feel more healthy and eco-friendly, just by being in the market?
- The two-foot tall mounds of swiss chard, perhaps?
- The largest bulk-food selection I have ever laid eyes on?
- The absence of turbo-sanitized, lemme eat some pesticides, bleached-just-this-morning supermarket luster?
- Maybe it’s the sensation that fellow shoppers are my people: hard-working, urban-homestead-bound foodies of all shapes, ages and income levels?
As I come down from my real-food high, it is appropriate to make a sobering statement: for those without income, real-food is indeed cost-prohibitive. And yet, real-food resources abound. Too name a few:
- Homefullness is an organization focused on providing resources to homeless individuals,
“Located on the grounds of the Gateway Shelter for Men, Homefull’s Micro Farm boasts over 160 raised beds, growing fresh produce.” (Source)
- Endlessly Organic is an organization that offers organic produce to families who may not otherwise have produce in the kitchen.
- Earthbound Farm Organic donates organic produce to local schools and hospitals. (Source)
- Organic Valley offers grants, cash, and food donations. (Source)
Ultimately, I’m making three statements in response to three questions today:
- Can we find accessibly priced real-food? YES!
- Should we re-prioritize such that a larger percentage of our budget is available for real-food? YES!
- As our culture re-discovers the vitality of real-food, is there market space for creative innovation in the real-food movement? HECK YES!!!
